Biodiversity Conservation: Whys and Hows?

Ecosystem degradation, extinction of life on Earth, climate warming, frequent disasters, plagues...

These serious crises facing the Earth are closely linked to the uncertainty faced by human beings today, which will have a profound effect on the future development direction of human society and economy. One of the root causes of these problems is that human beings have been pursuing development and utilizing resources in an unsustainable way, especially since the Industrial Revolution. Therefore, whether it is for the sustainability of the Earth or that of human development and survival, a positive solution is needed. Turning around the declining trend of biodiversity by 2030 and delivering a world living in harmony with Nature by 2050 is a vision set out in the Convention on Biological Diversity and also a future promised by countries around the world. The questions are, can such an ambitious goal be achieved, and how to achieve it? Professor Lv Zhi will share her observations and insights based on the research and practice she has carried out in the area of nature conservation in the past three decades.

地球面临的严重危机,与人类今天面临的不确定性息息相关,这将深刻地影响人类社会经济未来的发展方向,而问题根源之一,是人类自身不可持续的发展和资源利用,特别是工业革命以来。因此无论是地球的可持续还是人类发展与生存的可持续,都在呼唤一个良性的解决方案。在2030年前扭转生物多样性下降的趋势,2050年前实现人与自然共生,是生物多样性公约的愿景,也是全世界各国承诺的未来。这样一个宏大的目标,是否能够实现?如何实现?吕植教授将通过过去30年在自然保护领域研究和实践的案例,分享她的观察和见解。

Lv Zhi

Lv Zhi is a Professor at the School of Life Sciences/Institute of Ecology of Peking University, the Executive Director of Peking University Center for Nature and Society, a Vice President of Chinese Women Scientists Association, the Founder of Shan Shui Conservation Center, and a member of the Advisory Committee for the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030). Professor Lv Zhi is committed to nature conservation-related research and practice, and seek evidence-based practical solutions for nature. conservation and sustainable development. She has long been carrying out research on endangered flagship species such as giant panda and snow leopard in the mountains of southwest China and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau from the perspectives of ecological sciences and conservation biology, observing interspecific relationships, trophic cascades and interactions between nature and human activities. In recent years, she has been focused on exploring the mechanisms and conditions for the coexistence between man and nature, and is committed to push forward rural community-led biodiversity conservation and restoration, as well as citizens’ science practices by promoting economic incentives, cultural values, policy improvements, etc. Professor Lv Zhi graduated from Peking University with a bachelor’s degree and a doctoral degree. She once worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the United States, and served as a visiting scholar at Harvard University and Yale University.

吕植,北京大学生命科学学院/生态研究中心教授,北京大学自然保护与社会发展研究中心执行主任,中国女科技工作者协会副会长山水自然保护中心创始人联合国生态修复十年 2021-2030 顾问委员会成员吕植教授致力于自然保护的研究与实践的连结,寻求自然保护和可持续发展基于证据的实用解决方案。她长期在中国西南山地和青藏高原开展濒危旗舰物种如大熊猫和雪豹的生态学和保护生物学研究,观察种间关系、营养级联及自然与人类活动的互动。近年来,她专注于探索人与自然共存的机制和条件,并通过经济激励、文化价值观和政策改进等途径推动乡村社区主导的生物多样性保护与恢复,以及公民科学实践。吕植教授本科和博士毕业于北京大学,曾在美国NIH从事博士后研究,在哈佛大学和耶鲁大学任访问学者。
